As a result, many countries are reversing decades of peacetime policy to reignite their war engines. Others never stopped and are only consolidating efforts to ensure they are fit for conflict. But there is little doubt that all Europe is now scrambling to prepare in anticipation of what may lie over the horizon. Here, MailOnline assesses what Britain and its continental allies are doing to ready their armed forces, economies and citizens for the prospect of war.

Is Charles' portrait a warning about the future of the monarchy? How artist behind King's fiery painting used the red of the Welsh Guards and an endangered butterfly to 'tell multiple stories'
King Charles ' first portrait as a monarch has been unveiled, but experts have suggested that the artist has hidden deeper meaning in the key details. The 8.5ft-tall oil on canvas by Jonathan Yeo was revealed to the public and the Royal family at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace today. In the painting, the King can be seen standing in his Welsh Guards uniform with a sword in his hand and a butterfly on his shoulder, while the whole canvas is awash in a deep red colour. Yeo has made no secret that he wanted to break from tradition for this sitting, and make this portrait more 'dynamic and contemporary'. That is why viewers can see some of the traditions upheld, such as the military outfit and the sword, but with a twist of modern in the striking red colour and the butterfly.

Elbow frontman Guy Garvey hailed the 'beautiful' Co-op Live arena last night, as the crisis-ridden venue finally hosted its first gig. The beleaguered arena in Manchester opened with the rock band after it was forced to call off three concerts at the last minute. The £365m venue opened after an inspection gave the arena the all-clear, with boss Tim Leiweke adding he is confident it is now 'the safest building in the world.' 'There was already electricity in the air before you lot got in here and now it's fully amped up. I hope you can feel it,' he said last night, after support act The Waeve performed. Before concluding their set, Garvey told the crowd: 'You've house-warmed this beautiful new venue, shall we sing one last song together?' in a video on X. It follows a string of issues at the arena, which now boasts being the largest in the UK, including concerning structural issues with the building, with parts from the ventilation falling from the ceiling. The band boosted fans confidence that the night will go ahead as planned after posting a photo of their stage set up in the arena saying 'ready'.

Eggs instead of avocado on toast, replace mozzarella for cheddar cheese - and eat carrots and cauliflower rather than peppers and courgettes: The food swaps to help British farmers as Rishi Sunak bids to reduce UK reliance on imported produce
The Prime Minister used a food summit in Downing Street to tell farmers they are 'vital to the security and fabric of our country' while warning that a new 'food security index' has found the UK is too reliant on imports. The study, which will report on food production and land use on an annual basis, found just 55 per cent of vegetables bought in this country are grown domestically and only 17 per cent of fruit. In March 2023 he suggested three British Jewish women - including a teenage girl - who were shot dead in the occupied West Bank were war criminals.

'Catherine who?' say selfie-hunters when they're asked about the Princess of Wales while trying to get a glimpse of Meghan Markle in Nigeria
On a humid open-air basketball court on the fringes of Nigeria 's capital, a local cameraman is beseeching the Duchess of Sussex to look down his lens. 'Royalty!' he shouts. 'Come on, Royalty! Look this way!' Crowded by well-wishers, Meghan winces at the pesky photographer's protocol-busting impudence. Notwithstanding that the Sussexes' non-royal visit to Africa's most populous nation is, in fact, really rather regal, had nobody told him that the couple cut ties with the House of Windsor ages ago? The 42-year-old ignores his entreaties and instead chats to a little girl in a princess dress who is presenting her with a bunch of red roses. 'Royalty!' the snapper cries again. By now he is little more than an arm's length from the duchess.
EXCLUSIVEOperation airlift: Ex-soldier who twice dragged his beloved beachfront home back from a crumbling cliff edge now launches 'military-grade' plan to use helicopter to carry it to safety
Lance Martin has already saved his chalet from the brink on two occasions using a heavy machinery to drag it to safer territory. But further dramatic erosion in Hemsby, Norfolk, means he is now looking at a more permanent solution. 'I'm thinking of an airlift. It's a military-grade operation. It seems crazy but it can be done,' he said. Mr Martin has been drafting plans for the procedure, which would involve using ship-launching airbags to prop up the structure while steel joists are slid underneath. Cables would be attached to lifting points before it is hooked to a heavy-lift helicopter to carry it away.
